Function
Last modified February 17, 2011
This subsection of the ‘General annotation (Comments)’ section describes the function(s) of a protein.
There is usually only one ‘Function’ subsection per protein entry. However, when a protein displays some very different or contradictory functions depending on the context, they are described in different paragraphs. This case is rare.
Example: Q06628
When a protein is a precursor of different chains/peptides having different functions, we specify the role of each peptide in separate paragraphs.
Example: Q8MMJ7
The same holds true for isoform-specific functions.
Example: Q8MMJ7
Multifunctional enzymes should have only one ‘Function’ subsection for the different activities.
Example: P0A9Q8
Note that the physiological ligands of receptors are cited in this subsection, and not in the ‘Subunit structure’ subsection.
Example: P29317
