This subsection of the ‘General annotation (Comments)’ section describes the function(s) of a protein.
There is usually only one ‘Function’ subsection per protein entry. However, when a protein displays some very different or contradictory functions depending on the context, they are described in different paragraphs. This case is rare.
When a protein is a precursor of different chains/peptides having different functions, we specify the role of each peptide in separate paragraphs.
The same holds true for isoform-specific functions.
Multifunctional enzymes should have only one ‘Function’ subsection for the different activities.
Note that the physiological ligands of receptors are cited in this subsection, and not in the ‘Subunit structure’ subsection.
