Domain

This subsection of the ‘Sequence annotation (Features)’ section describes the position and type of a domain, which is defined as a specific combination of secondary structures organized into a characteristic three-dimensional structure or fold.

Protein domains often correspond to structural domains which are self-stabilizing and fold independently of the rest of the protein chain. They may occur independently or as part of complex multidomain protein architectures which evolve by domain accretion, domain loss or domain recombination. Protein domains can therefore be viewed as a ‘parts list’ for biology. The majority of domains annotated in UniProtKB are defined by the InterPro resources PROSITE, Pfam and SMART.

The number and type of each protein domain is explicitly stated in the ‘Sequence similarity’ subsection of the ‘General annotation (Comments)’ section.
