Catalytic activity

Last modified February 17, 2011

This subsection of the ‘General annotation (Comments)’ section describes the catalytic activity of an enzyme, i.e. the chemical reaction it catalyzes.

Note that this subsection usually correlates with the presence of an EC (Enzyme Commission) number in the ‘Protein names’ subsection of the ‘Names and origin’ section.

Whenever possible, we follow the recommendations of the Nomenclature Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) for the description of the enzymatic activity.

For enzymes catalyzing more than one reaction which have been attributed EC number(s) by the IUBMB, all reactions are described in a single ‘Catalytic activity’ subsection.
Example: Q00955

In some cases, this subsection can be present even in the absence of a complete EC number, for instance when a publication describes the chemical reaction in detail.
Example: P36639
