Sarcoplasmic reticulum

Definition

The sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is a highly specialized form of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum which is dedicated to the regulation of intracellular calcium homeostasis. The SR can be subdivided in at least two well-characterized regions: the terminal cisternae, where the calcium ions are released, and the longitudinal tubules specialized in the uptake of the calcium ions.
