Cellular component Kinetochore

UniProtKB (567) rdf/xml obo
DefinitionThe kinetochore is a protein complex assembled on the centromeric region of DNA. It provides the major attachement point for the spindle microtubules during mitotic or meiotic division to pull the chromosomes apart. In monocentric chromosomes, the kinetochores of point centromeres bind a single microtubule and the larger kinetochores of regional centromeres interact with a number of microtubules. In holocentric chromosomes, the kinetochores bind the diffuse centromere along the length of the chromosomes.
