DefinitionThe periplasm is the space between the inner and outer membrane in Gram-negative bacteria. In Gram-positive bacteria a smaller periplasmic space is found between the inner membrane and the peptidoglycan layer. Also used for the intermembrane spaces of fungi and organelles.
