Inhibition of host apoptosis by viral BCL2-like protein
| Definition | Viral protein sharing sequence similarity with host BCL2 protein. Cellular BCL2 family members are divided in two groups, some having anti-apoptotic activity (such as BCL2 itself) while others have pro-apoptotic function (such as BAX). If the level of proapoptotic members are higher than inhibitors, then the cell undergoes apoptosis. So far, all viral homologues display anti-apoptotic activity. |
