DefinitionProtein which, if defective, causes hemolytic uremic syndrome, a disorder characterized by non-immune hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and renal failure. The vast majority of cases are sporadic, occur in young children and are associated with epidemics of diarrhea due to bacterial infections. This typical form of the disease has a good prognosis and death rate is very low. In contrast to typical hemolytic uremic syndrome, atypical forms present without a prodrome of enterocolitis and diarrhea and have a poor prognosis, with frequent development of end-stage renal disease or death.
