Protein which is posttranslationally modified on at least one lysine residue to form hypusine (N-epsilon-(4-aminobutyl)lysine). This spermidine-dependent reaction is catalyzed by deoxyhypusine synthase and deoxyhypusine hydroxylase. eIF-5A is the only protein in eukaryotes and archaebacteria known to contain hypusine.
