Transposable element
| Definition | Protein encoded by a transposable element, or transposon, a mobile DNA segment that can replicate and insert a copy at another site within the genome. Simple transposons only contains genes needed for insertion. More complex types also carry genes with functions unrelated to insertion, e.g. genes for resistance to antibiotics or heavy metals. |
