Membrane protein which, in dimeric, trimeric or tetrameric form, constitutes a water-filled transmembrane channel ("pore"). This pore allows the passage of ions and numerous other, non-specific molecules through the membrane. Found in the mitochondrial outer membrane of eukaryotes, in many Gram-negative bacteria and in sea anemones.
