Protein involved in the reaction of the immune system to an antigen, which includes the production of antibodies (humoral response), the cellular response (destruction of cells displaying foreign antigens on their cell surface by cytotoxic T-cells, or the stimulation of B-lymphocytes to produce antibodies by T-helper cells), the complement activation and in some cases the development of immunological tolerance.
