What are reference proteomes?

Last modified September 21, 2011

Complete proteomes

UniProt provides several complete sets of proteins thought to be expressed by organisms whose genomes have been completely sequenced. Each UniProtKB entry belonging to a complete proteome is tagged with the keyword 'Complete proteome', so you can retrieve the complete proteome of your favorite organism by searching for its taxonomic identifier in combination with this keyword.

Reference proteomes

Some of these complete proteomes have been selected as reference proteomes. Reference proteomes are manually defined according to a number of criteria. They cover the proteomes of well-studied model organisms and other proteomes of interest for biomedical research.

These reference proteomes are tagged with the keyword 'Reference proteome'.
